We’ve been doing kegged cocktails for the tasting room and talking about how to distribute for on-premise. I think it’s probably a non-starter but I’d love to request it. I believe it’s allowed in Australia and it would be great if we could provide some info showing other places that allow for it.

It would be great if the standards of fill would add 18.92 liter (5 gallon) containers so we could fill 5 gallon kegs for our tasting room and on premise accounts.
We also use “American Malt Whiskey” as a fanciful name and I would hate to see that jeopardized.P.T.

Even though our distillery doesn’t currently use smaller than 53 g. format barrels I see no reason to limit ourselves or others in what size “oak barrel” they use. I think size makes a big difference in the product and therefore is something I recommend consumers ask questions about, but I wouldn’t go as far as to say a barrel size statement was…[Read more]

Hi Mark,
I agree with you that barrel size should not be on labels. It should not be a part of the required information that we need to put on barrels, but rather something distilleries can use as part of their marketing. We only have so much room on labels, let’s not waste it on barrel sizes.
From oak container to oak barrel is interesting! I…[Read more]

I have access to a steady stream of potatoes that could be used in collaboration with a great non profit. Trouble is, I don’t make potato vodka. I am trying to figure out the best practice for mashing. My assumption is I need a hammer mill to break up the potatoes and save my agitator. Is this on point? Is a hammer mill the best option?
I have…[Read more]

They’ve added the ability to make personalized labels. This is a very good thing – as we’re finding that personalization is worth the effort. Personalization is something that as Craft and local we can do that the BIG CO’s can’t do cost efficiently. In the preamble they outline that they are seeking to reduce complexity and number of labels.…[Read more]

I understand. We are offering custom whiskies where bars and consumers create their own. This rule will create a massive complexity
We have an American single malt we are developing and don’t want to use straight as well

Hi Mark,
One scenario where we specifically do NOT want to use a Type designation is when producing our Whiskey that we have a (currently) fanciful name of “American Single Malt”. Our current releases of whiskey happen to adhere to all of the requirements for the TTB designation of “Malt Whisky”, (i.e., “Whisky produced at not exceeding 80%…[Read more]

Thanks for the replies everyone! Right now I have Dansko’s. They are comfortable ( memory foam), rubber, slip-on, and relatively low top. Courtney, you made excellent points for slip-on and low-top. I love slip-on shoes because I am efficient (lazy) with shoes, but I don’t find I have enough ankle support. Years of basketball have removed ankle’s…[Read more]

According to the explanation section in the proposal, “In the current regulations, when a whisky meets the standard for a type of whisky, it is unclear whether the label must use that type designation or may use the general class “whisky” on the label. TTB believes that consumers expect that the type designation will appear on the container when…[Read more]

Does anyone understand why TTB is proposing the you must use more specific whiskey names… i.e. Wheat, Rye, Corn, Barley – and can’t simply use “Whiskey” as a more generic name.

Thanks for adding to the discussion, Jason. It’s disappointing to here that there has been no mention of American Single Malt, a still growing category. Let me know how I can help!
