Fall has returned to Sussex County, and with it comes countless classic fall beverages. Apple Cider. Pumpkin Spice Lattes. Beach Plum Rum. That’s right, Beach Plum Rum, a unique spirit crafted locally by Beach Time Distilling in Lewes. The rum, released on October 20th, has captured the attention of many local residents over the three years the distillery has been in operation.
Owner and Distiller Greg Christmas uses local beach plums to infuse their flavor into the hand crafted silver rum. “This is the fourth release of our Beach Plum Rum and every year it is a little different. This year we had to take the ferry over to Cape May County to buy the Beach Plums because the heavy rains caused a lot of the beach plums in this area to split and rot.” Over a six to eight week period, the plums
sit in a tank full of silver rum, until the flavor of the fruit comes through in the rum. The result is a semi-sweet spirit, with dry characteristics that make it ideal for use in a drink like Beach Time’s signature Tsunami.
The Beach Plum Rum is available while supplies last over the course of the fall and winter seasons. This year’s batch was bottled in 375 ml bottles, which cost $25 a piece.
